September 2018 – Israel

On Monday, 3rd September, the Sylvans debated the motion ‘This house views Israel more as an oppressor than as an underdog.’

It was proposed by Tony Koutsoumbos and opposed by Peter Hulme-Cross.

The debate was wide-ranging, and largely focused on issues related to Israel’s dominant military and political position.  We heard an excellent historical backdrop for the founding of the state of Israel and the drivers of the subsequent conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.  Israel’s actions were condemned by a number of speakers, with some speakers also strongly supporting Israel’s right to defend itself.

The final vote saw the motion pass.
