June 2018 – artificial intelligence

On Monday, 4th June, the Sylvans debated the resolution that ‘This House believes that humanity should fear advances in artificial intelligence.’

It was proposed by Rodrigo Aguilera and opposed by Prospero DaGama.

We heard the potential impact of AI, ranging from super-intelligent AI destroying the world to its economic costs and benefits, while exploring human fear and the potential safeguards against uncontrolled AI.

In a close vote, the motion was defeated.
