On Monday, 2nd July, the Sylvans debated the resolution that ‘This House believes that Westminster should legislate to bring Northern Ireland’s abortion law into line with the rest of the UK.’
It was proposed by Maya Chilaeva and opposed by Elaine McLean.
The debate began with a well-structured argument focused on the human rights of women in NI and the application of UK law controlled by Westminster, as well as reflecting the significant challenges faced by many of the women in NI who wish to have an abortion. A number of arguments were made against the motion, many focusing on the view that Westminster should not impose cultural change on NI, given the history of British rule and the Troubles, and the complication that no devolved administration is currently in place there. The debate was finely balanced and hinged on an impassioned closing speech.
In a close vote the motion passed.
