August 2018 – Brexit

On Monday, 6th August, the Sylvans debated the motion ‘This House believes we are on course for a Brexit that will make the UK weaker and more isolated in the international community.’

It was proposed by Vaughan Evans and opposed by Joe Lambert.

There were two main threads to the debate.  The proposer opened with a clear and rational argument about the possible outcomes of the Brexit negotiations, and their likely impact on the country and economy.  The opposer appealed to the sense of Britain’s strong historical ability to find ways to adapt to changing circumstances, and discounted the doom-mongering of the Remainers.  Both of these were echoed by a number of the floor speakers, seemingly reflecting the broader debate occurring across the country.

The final vote saw the motion pass.
